Message from Our Sponsor

On this first day of school, Murphy's Law seemed inevitable.

It was raining after weeks of drought.

Dan's runner had a flat.

He took the car.

I kept the boys too long in the house.

They missed the bus that came early.
I needed to shower.
I took them to school instead.
I used the truck.
Its tabs expired Sunday.
I drove onto the license bureau.
Would I get pulled over enroute?
The "check engine" light flashed.
I hoped for aid if it died.

The day kept going on like this until I arrived safely home minutes before the schoolbus. I checked my emails, found this Message from Our Sponsor, and rested assured in my trials. Here's hoping you will too!

Where's Wendy?

Two weeks ago, I left on a 12-day tour leading five ladies across Scandinavia. Before leaving, I emailed my family members and our hosts a three-page itinerary entitled "Where's Wendy?" so that they could uphold us during our rigorous journey and contact us in the event of emergency.

Their prayers paid off many fold. Today I am privileged to share a photo sampling of the awesome adventure:

Climbing to the summit at Stiklestad where a statue of the Christian-

Because of our marriage, this whole trip began at Dan's suggestion: sending his wife back to her adopted home and taking with her his father's cousins to see the homeland of their Grandma Lena!

Where's Wendy now?

At home, pondering how to properly update her blog – Norway Bound.

Tusen hjertelig takk for turen!

25-Year Jubilee

Twenty-five years ago today (August 6th), I arrived in Norway for the first time.

I was an American Rotary Exchange student who knew basic facts about the country but understood little of the people's culture. At the start, I relied on my interpretor to translate words of greeting from the Rotary Club's president. But step by step, that all changed as I was immersed into the Norwegian lifestyle.

In the autumn,

I learned

how to pack

open-faced

sandwiches

in wax paper for picnicking in the woods by an open fire.

At Christmas,

I helped select,

cut and decorate

a local forest tree

with vertical garlands

of tinsel and flags,

homemade ornaments

and candlelights.

And by winter's height, I strapped on skis, fish-boned up mountains and wondered – in great awe – at how minuscule we are as human beings. In short, I was awakened.

Many years have since passed. I've returned to Norway: once to live as a college student and twice on vacation.

In those early days of 1983, I dreamed (along with other "exchangees") of returning for a 25-year celebration. I'd forgotten that until...

I began the final countdown to this upcoming trip and counted back 2008-1983=25. To my great surprise, I will return for my 25-Year Jubilee!

Here's to STRONG coffee in tiny cups!

Tending Gardens

We all tend gardens. The question is what kind and how well?

I thought about that this morning as I walked past my flower tub on my way up the driveway with the can for the garbage man.

From a distance, I admired the pink geraniums and red petunias.

Upon a closer look, I was shocked to see blooms at all – considering the tub's dry, weedy soil.

I looked across the road at my neighbor's vegetable garden. Every day I see her out working the soil, weeding and watering. Her plants thrive because that's where she spends her time.

So... where do I spend mine?

Lately – in my bedroom office, sorting through old photos of my husband's ancestors.

Soon I will lead his dad's cousins back to Norway to their grandmother's birthplace to meet their cousins in her homeland. We plan to present the family with a booklet of their American relatives. I'm offering the ladies options.

And so, I weed through pictures, looking for good quality ones representative of family life.

Just as garden plants sprout, bud, bloom and produce fruit, so do families.

The evidence is obvious in the youthful appearance of newlyweds, portraits of their small children and candids of the group as they all age.

Photos show the progression of the young ready to step out and bear their own fruit; And of the aging couples with their physical signs linked to wisdom.

I choose a few, scan them onto my computer and then layout pages – as a gardener lays out her produce.

Whereas she might preserve her work in canned or frozen batches, I produce my results on the printer – one page at a time.

Yes, we all Tend Gardens – whether of plants, children or otherwise.

And as a wise, old neighbor used to say: I'm just grateful they thrive in spite of me.
