Take Care to Wonder

Rain kept us indoors all day.

Isaac wanted help looking for his clarinet music that's been packed away. I dug through two tubs of stuff with no luck for him. BUT, I surprised myself finding a piece I've wanted for months – and didn't even know was in my possession. (Click on the photo above for a closer view.)

I found it in an old folder of guitar music. My heart leaped when I opened the green folder and saw a book called "Hymnal for Young Christians" first copyrighted 1966. I felt compelled to page through the loose pages in the front.

Between page 46 and 32, I found page 148. (Yes, the pages were quite jumbled.) From its top, I read "Wonder-Full World" by James Thiem. I scanned the page recognizing the refrain and FIVE verses for the song which begins: "Take care to wonder at the world through which you wander. Never hurry by an open door, for you live in a universe, full of miracles galore."

Last September, I wrote about this song in a post called Miracles Galore. I remembered my first-grade teacher instilling this song upon my heart to teach us to love all God's creation. Unfortunately, time had erased all but the first verse from my memory.

I attempted several internet searches trying to locate the song. Quite often my search would begin after someone else had "googled" this song and checked out my blog post as a reference. (That's the beauty of a STATcounter. It allows the patron to see how people reach his/her website.) As I browsed over their inquiry selections, I realized these people's searches also seemed to dead end.

My sister helped me seek information from our parochial elementary school. Her son now attends our alma mater and some of the same teachers still work there. Unfortunately, none of them had a copy of the 1970s "orange songbook" from which I remembered singing "Wonder-Full World." Even the church office failed to find a copy in their files. (Thanks for trying, Tam!)

I had one other internet lead to follow up with at a church camp in Illinois noted in a theology student's doctorate which made mention of this song. However, other things in my life took precedence over writing to the camp headquarters. And, what was the chance they'd still have a songbook from decades years ago?

Upon finding this treasure today, I noticed guitar chords written – in red pencil – above the music. Then, another grade-school memory returned: At our children's church services, guitar song leaders stood up front playing this song.

I leafed through other music in the green folder and found a red piece of construction paper. There – in my elementary scrawl – was this song and the chords copied to practice at home. Of course! I'd been one of those guitar song leaders.

BING! (The light bulb went on.) No wonder this song stuck with me through the years.(Although I'm still uncertain how this hymnal came into my possession... picked up later at a church rummage sale?)

Today, I grabbed my guitar, strummed and sang the first verse:

"Look for God in small things: drops of rain or a grain of sand. Praise him whenever you find him in anything small."

I gave thanks for the rain. It led me to today's small miracle and allows me to hold true my promise: to post this song for others who "Take Care to Wonder."

Here are the other verses:

vs 2. Look for God in bright things: Someone's eyes or the skies at noon. Praise him whenever you find him in anything bright.

vs. 3. Look for God in black things: Storms at dusk or a brother's skin. Praise him whenever you find him in anything black.

vs. 4. Look for God in weak things: Newborn deer or a fearful child. Praise him whenever you find him in anything weak.

vs. 5. Look for God in wet things: Dewy grass or a glass of wine. Praise him whenever you find him in anything wet.

Come! Rejoice with me.

What was once lost

is now found.

Luke 15:6,9,32

Now, about Isaac's clarinet music. Hmmm?

I'm so glad you found this, too. We used to sing this at Girl Scout camps for Sunday services. Such a wonderful way to remember how God speaks to us through His creation.

Thanks!!

Thanks for the memories. A conversation with my girlfriend sparked the memory of this song I learned in Parochial school in the late 60s. I was hoping to be able to hear it but the words are a good start. Born and raised as a 100% Italian Catholic, I still consider my self a believer although not necacerraly in the Catholic teachings.

God Bless You for posting this blog and for your tireless search to find this song! :) I also grew up in Catholic schools and vaguely remembered this song.....all I could remember was 'grain of sand'. When I contacted my catholic school principal she also vaguely remembered the song but provided just one more verse than I knew. When I googled it, yours was the first hit I clicked on. :) Thank you! This little song was everything to my little 6 year old heart and the faith that was to grow from there. Thank you, thank you, thank you! :)

Thank you! I also was born in 1966, like your commenter above. The nuns at my parochial grade school taught me this beautiful song and I have always wanted to find all the words again. I will teach is to my granddaughters now. It carries a valuable message.

Would you mind uploading a video of you playing this song? I vaguely remember the melody and I can't read music! :( I would love to hear the song again.

Thank you for sharing your song. It was beautiful. Learned this song in the Catholic School back in the seventies and for some reason it has always stayed with me. Wish I could download it in iTunes. God Bless you.

Would you believe that over a year later I am hearing your song for the first time? When I was little I used music to soothe myself...and this precious song was my solace and my comfort. It was also my song of rejoicing and how I lived my life as a child. To this day I find pleasure in the rain or the sun....I love it all. I thank you for honoring my request and uploading the video. You did an amazing job. May you be 20 times blessed for the gift you gave us! :-)

Thank you for posting the lyrics and a recording of this song. I remember it well from my days (the 1970s) at St Rose of Lima in Miami Shores FL. I'm surprised that the song is nowhere to be found on YouTube.

Thanks, J. Based on the number of searches that have led people to this post, I too am amazed someone with greater talent has not posted "Wonder-Full World" on youtube.

I can't remember much of anything from elementary school growing up in Worthington, MN, but I remember this song word-for-word. I've searched for it before but never found it. What a treat.

I have never posted on a blog in my life until now b/c this song has resonated in my heart for 44 years and I am so full of joy this morning to find all the lyrics! This song "popped" into my head this morning and the desire was so strong that I searched for these words and found it. Oh thank you! (Maybe my spirit needs to meditate on these words today.) My son plays the guitar and I can not wait to sing the song with him. Like most commenters, I grew up in a Catholic school (St. Anthony of Padua in Parma, Ohio - first grade in 1970). Wonderful memories from our music ministry are buried deep in my mind/soul as quite often an old Mass song from my childhood will just pop into my head - but I can only remember parts of it and long to sing the entire song. It is said that "Song helps the Word find a home in the heart." How true!! Is not God wonderful! ~Maryann

We sang this song at Summer Girl Scout Camp in Hamburg, Iowa back in the late 60's early 70's. Love this song! So glad I was able to find this site! I wanted to share the words in my gratitude/mindfulness journal group!

I am delivering a sermon on Inter-dependence, how all things of creation are related, on July 3. I decided to search out this song because I intended to refer to it in my homily. Back in the 60’s I worked with young people in the parishes I served in my home state of Pennsylvania and later in Maryland. I taught this song to so many people both in congregations, youth gatherings, retreats, and everywhere I went camping as I walked around the campground like a troubadour. I thought that one day I would be surprised when it “came back to me” from somewhere. Camping in Canada I was walking around the campground, guitar in hand when I heard the so familiar words being sung by female voices. I followed the sounds till I came upon a group of teenage girls who were singing it. They were from a parochial school in Canada and I learned they were taught it by the nuns at their school. I joined in the singing and have never forgotten that experience.

I went to a Catholic summer camp called Camp St. John, it was on the St. Johns River near Jacksonville Florida in 1966 & 1967. The lyrics would pop up in my head every once in a while over the years, and I have search for it in the past. Last night was the first time I’ve been able to find the song with the lyrics. Thank you for taking the time to post this. I know I will try to teach it to my children. Too bad someone like Julie Andrew’s didn’t record this song long ago for everyone to enjoy.
